The public prosecutor in New Caledonia has given details about the shooting incident in which a bullet was fired into a classroom.

Investigations revealed the 38-year-old man had an argument with a friend when they were both drunk.

He reportedly fired off a gun outside a shop in Kaala-Gomen in the territory's north, with the bullet going in the direction of a nearby school.

Nobody was injured when the bullet went through the classroom door as it flew over the children who were sitting at their desks.

The gunman had not been named but media reports say he used to live in the village.
