A French Polynesian member of the French Senate has flown to Saint Martin in the Caribbean to help assess the damage caused by Hurricane Irma earlier this month.

Lana Tetuanui travelled at the behest of the president Edouard Fritch to express the solidarity of French Polynesia with the storm's victims.

The French Polynesian government released more than US$50,000 to help the relief effort.

Mrs Tetuanui told the public broadcaster that the sum may be modest but that it matters for France's overseas territories to show solidarity in the face of climate change.
