The governor of Madang Province in Papua New Guinea, Peter Yama, says he intends to restore Madang to its former glory days as a key PNG tourist destination.

The Post Courier reports Mr Yama also plans to re-introduce the Mabarosa Festival from next year following news crime levels in Madang have dropped since the election in June.

The businessman, who has been in and out of politics having represented Sumkar Open, Usino-Bundi Open and now the Madang regional seat in Parliament, said the election of new MPs and a new provincial government has people excited.

He said MPs aim to work together as a team regardless of whether they are in opposition or government.

Mr Yama said the people of Madang had already taken a lead by voluntarily cleaning up Madang town.
