New Caledonia will take on the motherland, France, in their opening group match at the Under 17 Men's Football World Cup in India.

It's the debut appearance for the French territory at a FIFA tournament, after Oceania was awarded an additional spot in the main draw.

The Francophones secured qualification back in February by finishing runners-up to New Zealand at the Oceania Championships in Papeete.

They spent a few days in Singapore to round out their preparations, including a match against the national Under 18 side.

Head coach Dominique Wacalie said they have had a strong build-up to the World Cup.

"It's been good preparation yes for the World Cup because I have a good technical agent from OFC that's come with me to preparations for the World Cup."

New Caledonia will also face Honduras and Japan in the group stage.
