Seasonal outlook for Pacific cyclone season released

With tropical cyclone season approaching, the Fiji Met Service has released its annual seasonal outlook for its area of responsibility in the Pacific.

It said near average tropical cyclone activity was expected in the area this season with four to six cyclones likely to occur.

It said up to three of them could reach Category 3 status or above.

Tropical cyclone risk is anticipated to be normal for Fiji, Southern Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Wallis & Futuna.

A reduced risk is expected for Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Samoa, Tonga, Niue and the Cook Islands.

The Fiji Met Service tropical cyclone activity was unlikely for Kiribati and the Marquesas this season.

The peak period for cyclones in the region is usually from January to March.
