Papua New Guinea has asked Australia to provide air security during next years APEC meeting in Port Moresby.

In preparation, the Australian Air Force flew two F18 Super hornets into Port Moresby last week.

The fighter planes flew back to Australia on Thursday after circling the city three times.

The PNG police commissioner and commander of the APEC Joint Security Task Force Gari Baki said the display of air power was a message to the world that PNG is ready to host the APEC summit.

Mr Baki said the Australian Defence Force will also assist with other security areas that PNG is not capable of handling.

"We are down here on the ground and don't know what is happening up there in the air, and this is the responsibility we are requesting the Australian Defence Force to step in and help."
