Police in Papua New Guinea have arrested a man suspected of attempting to carjack an Australian family last week in Central Province.

The family, who live in Port Moresby, were returning from a visit to the Varirata National Park when they noticed their car was being followed by another vehicle.

It overtook them before stopping and blocking the road when five men dismounted carrying factory made guns.

Due to its proximity to Port Moresby, land in Central Province is in demand.

The driver of the family's car reacted swiftly and reversed to safety, capturing footage of the attempted carjacking on the dash board camera.

The Central Province police commander Laimo Asi said the suspect, who was identified from the footage, had a record of similar activities along the Central Highway.

He said police are confident of making four more arrests.
