Samoa's population has increased to almost 200,000.

Census figures show the population count stands at 196,000 with growth in particular on Upolu.

The Samoa Observer quotes a senior census official Aliiomuamua Malaefono Taalogaa as saying Savai'i now only accounts for 22 percent of the population.

In the 1970s, almost a third of the population lived there.

He says people in Savai'i tend to move to Upolu because there are a lot of job opportunities and because their children can further their studies at a tertiary level.

The population has grown substantially over the past century as figures show Samoa had just over 32,000 people in 1902.
