Just over a week ago, the overseas minister Annick Girardin told the National Assembly that the next budget had no provision to feed the Green Fund meant to mitigate against climate change.

Ms Sage objected to the government decision and submitted an amendment to reinstate the funding.

With the support of two former overseas ministers, her bid was approved by 46 to 40 votes, reinserting the allocation which, in the case of French Polynesia, is worth almost $US30 million.

France set up the Fund last year after the 2015 Paris climate change conference.

However, the new government is reviewing its options after Ms Girardin said Green Fund costs ought to be borne by more than just her ministry.
