Sam Basil praised the NBC's election coverage and said it was remarkable that this was achieved despite ageing infrastructure and limited financial resources.

He said that elected leaders now need to assist the broadcaster in replacing its equipment.

According to Mr Basil, the NBC has been directed to investigate putting shortwave transmitters into all the provincial stations.

He said shortwave was still the most effective means of radio communication for PNG, given the rugged terrain and vast maritime environment.

Mr Basil claimed he would be asking provincial governments to help with the costs of the shortwave installation.
