Sport: PNG and Hong Kong Kong share spoils on day one

Papua New Guinea and Hong Kong are evenly poised at stumps on day one of their Intercontinental Cup cricket clash in Sharjah.

The Barramundis were dismissed for a disappointing 237 after winning the toss and electing to bat first.

Opening batsmen Tony Ura top-scored with 62 and put on 90 runs for the first wicket with debutant Kiplin Doriga, who made 40.

Lega Siaka (32) and captain Assad Vala (40) also made strong contributions but the PNG lower order failed to capitalise on a strong platform, losing their final eight wickets for 92 runs.

Nadeem Ahmed was the pick of the Hong Kong bowlers with figures of 5 for 72, while Ehsan Khan claimed 3 for 66.

Meanwhile Barramundis quicks Norman Vanua and Damien Ravu each picked up an early wicket to reduce Hong Kong to 19 for 2 inside six overs.

But captain Babar Hayat (12) and Anshuman Rath (20) guided Hong Kong to 50 for 2 at the close of play, still 197 runs behind.
