Samoa and American Samoa agree to address overcrowding in prison

Samoa and American Samoa have agreed to find a way to address the number of Samoan nationals in American Samoa's overcrowded prison, among other measures.

A communiqué released after a meeting between the two governments this week said Samoa is looking to draft legislation to deal with Samoans who are deported from overseas.

They also recognised the need for improved information exchange relating to deportees, including advanced notice and criminal records.

The majority of prisoners at American Samoa's corrections facility are Samoan nationals.

Meanwhile, the two governments also agreed to investigate ways to make it easier to transfer money between them, while still maintaining strong anti-money laundering provisions.
