French Polynesian drug haul sent off for burning

Reports from French Polynesia say the French police transferred two tonnes of cocaine to New Caledonia last week to be incinerated.

Radio1 reports that the operation involved burning the drugs in the furnaces of the SLN nickel smelter.

The drugs were seized in four separate raids in the course of the past year, each time during the interception of a yacht sailing from the Americas.

Police in New Caledonia have also seized huge cocaine consignments on yachts this year, which have also been burned at SLN.

The yachts were bound for Australia.
