An American Samoa lawmaker has raised questions in the territory's Senate over why a new food processing factory promised for the territory has still not eventuated.

Senate Pro Tem Nuanuaolefeagaiga Saoluaga Nua asked about the whereabouts of the Philippines-based AVM company which had promised many jobs for American Samoans.

A ground-breaking ceremony for the plant was held in 2016 at the Industrial Park in Tafuna but Nua said more than two years later there was no factory and no new jobs.

He said the Fono should look into what's happening with the project as many people were looking for work.

He asked for the Director of Commerce to give a status report on the much publicised venture.

The Senate President Gaoteote Palaie said that containers for the factory were at the site indicating it was moving ahead.

But he agreed the Senate should hear from the Director of Commerce on where things stand.

Late last year, the Governor Lolo Moliga said he would pull the plug on the project if it did not get moving by the end of the year.
