The Cook Islands News reported the cabinet has allocated $US37,000 towards relief after Gita swept through the Samoas, Tonga and parts of Fiji last week, causing massive damage.

The prime minister Henry Puna said he was confident people in the community would also give generously as they had in the past.

He said the most valuable assistance is cash which can be channelled through the Red Cross.
