Imperial Pacific International is asking for an extension for the 329-room Imperial Pacific Resort and Casino which was due to be completed by the end of August.

A lawyer for for the firm Philip Tydingco told the Commonwealth Casino Commission this is to make sure the completion proceeds in a "safe engineering and constructional manner".

Work on the Northern Marianas casino resort slowed when Imperial Pacific's prime contractor, MCC International, left the island after they had used illegal workers.

The Hong Kong-based company has been allowed to bring in more than a thousand temporary workers mostly from the Taiwan and the Philippines who are expected on island in a couple of months.
