A man has been detained in New Caledonia suspected of shooting and injuring a minor in a stolen car in Nakety.
The Nouvelles Caledoniennes reported the wounded teenager had been driven to the pharmacy in Canala from where he was transferred to the hospital in Noumea.
Investigations showed the man allegedly fired his rifle after being annoyed by the commotion caused by several stolen cars, hitting one of them.
The incident occurred during a week of community protest at lawlessness when schools and public services in Canala had closed.
In recent weeks a number of shop break-ins have also increased in the Noumea area, prompting business owners to call for a protest march on Thursday.
