The Fiji Times reported that the acting minister of national disaster management, Mereseini Vuniwaqa, made the announcement at the International Engineering Symposium on Monday.

Mrs Vuniwaqa said the Construction Implementation Unit was established through the Ministry of Economy along with voluntary support from members of the Fiji Institution of Engineers (FIE).

The government had allocated over $US82 million to assist rebuilding schools that were damaged by Tropical Cyclone Winston as part of the arrangement, she said.

The new unit, in collaboration with the FIE, would work to ensure that the schools were rebuilt according to the required standards, Mrs Vuniwaqa said.

The partnership would contribute to long-term resilience within the education sector, she added.
