The faux pas was in a promotional video designed to give tourists helpful iTaukei words to use while visiting Fiji.

The video used the words 'vale ni lotu' to mean toilet, when it in fact translates to 'a place of worship.'

Its release promoted both condemnation and derision from many in Fiji.

The opposition leader, Ro Teimumu Kepa, said she was outraged at Fiji Tourism's carelessness, and the incident undermined the sanctity of a sacred location for indigenous Fijians.

In a statement, Tourism Fiji apologised, blaming it on a graphic design mismatch.
