The Post Courier reported the breakout came about a year after 17 inmates from the same jail were shot dead during a 77-man breakout last June.

Police said Saturday's breakout occured during visiting hours when a knife was was allegedly smuggled into the prison.

A prison guard was stabbed before the escapees jumped the fence, police said.

The nine men still on the run are believed to have climbed over a mountain in the Lae suburb of West Taraka.

Police are searching the area and calling for information from the public.
