The governor of Western Province in Papua New Guinea has become the third opposition MP to join the government in recent days.

Taboi Awi Yoto made the announcement in parliament as the government welcomed Maprik MP John Simon and Usino-Bundi MP Jimmy Uguro to its ranks.

Mr Yoto, who had started as an MP with the United Resources Party, told journalists he needed the government's financial support.

Prime Minister Peter O'Neill welcomed all three MPs, saying they had boosted his People's National Congress to 46 MPs.

The Post Courier reported that the opposition was yet to formally comment on the floor crossing MPs.
