While delivering her maiden speech in parliament last week, Lenora Qereqeretabua said the media provided a vital role in discerning fact from fiction.

She said reporting needs to be done in a professional manner and expressed her concerns about the current state of media in the country.

"In Fiji, our media is either muzzled or has completely lost our trust. Misinformation matters because media outlets have great power. They shape the way we understand the world and ultimately drive our behaviour," Lenora Qereqeretabua said.

"It is no exaggeration to say that their activity can have life or death implications."
