Niueans work to revive dying language

From , 4:02 pm on 20 October 2016

The Niuean community is hoping that this week's Niuean language celebrations around New Zealand will help to revive their dying language.

This week's theme focuses on the maintenance, retention and development of Vagahau Niue.

While 74 percent of Niueans live in New Zealand, only around 13 percent of them are able to speak the language.

Events such as community quiz nights, song workshops in schools and other celebrations around the country are being aimed at helping people understand more about Vagahau Niue.

Amanda Patutaue chairs the Niuean Youth Network which organised some of the local events.
