Questions over Fiji National Fire Authority's in-house union

From , 4:03 pm on 24 October 2016

The Fiji Public Service Association says firefighters have been coerced into joining an "in-house" union by the National Fire Authority.

In a matter which has gone to the Employment Relation Tribunal, the FPSA claims that the Fire Service Union breaches national rules that disallow unions created by employers.

Relations between the FPSA and the Authority came to a head earlier this year over the government entity's failure to restore mandatory deductions for union fees.

The FPSA's secretary Rajeshwar Singh says that the Registrar of Trade Unions has been hampering their attempts to hold the NFA to account on the creation of its in-house union.
