Cook Islands police say they will review their processes after a prisoner killed two people before taking his own life last week.

Mary Dean and her partner Roger Tauarea were killed by her former partner Chris Rimamotu last Thursday, after escaping a prison guard while on community release.

Members of the public and the family of one of the victims have criticised the police for poor communication.

The Police Commissioner Maara Tetava was in charge of the operation in which Rimamotu is believed to have taken his life.

He spoke to Alex Perrottet.
