The Cook Islands police have apologised for poor communication during the double murder and shootout on Rarotonga last week.

Mary Dean and her partner Roger Tauarea were killed by her former partner Chris Rimamotu last Thursday, after he escaped a prison guard while on community release.

Mary Dean moved back to Rarotonga from the New Zealand town of Tokoroa seven years ago, with her youngest son.

Her family says they still have not received official information from the police.

Alex Perrottet reports.
