The chief executive of Tonga's Ministry of Internal Affairs says eight Tongan fruit pickers in New Zealand were ordered to return home last week for failing to comply with their contracts.

The workers, who had been in Kerikeri in New Zealand's far north, were among about 1700 Tongans taking part in New Zealand's Recognised Seasonal Employer scheme.

The ministry's chief executive, 'Ana Bing Fonua, told Don Wiseman what the workers, who are from Tofoa in the Ha'apai Group, had done wrong.
