Tonga PM says Finance Minister had to go

From , 4:04 pm on 7 March 2017

Tonga's Prime Minister has reshuffled his cabinet after losing a third minister in two years following the resignation of the Finance Minister 'Aisake Eke.

Last year 'Etuate Lavulavu lost his seat after being found guilty of bribery charges and Fe'ao Vakata was sacked over misconduct allegations.

This week Dr Eke was asked to resign in the aftermath of last month's defeated no-confidence vote which he abstained from.

Prime Minister 'Akilisi Pohiva says Revenue Minister and first time MP Tevita Lavemaau will replace Dr Eke, while Pohiva Tu'i'onetoa moves across from his Police portfolio.

Another first-time MP and Mr Pohiva's son-in-law Mateni Tapueluelu enters cabinet as the new Police Minister.

The Prime Minister says the changes had to be made.
