Norfolk leaders gain little from Canberra delegation

From , 5:01 am on 3 July 2017

Norfolk Islands Council of Elders met a delegation from the Australian Prime Minister's and Cabinet Office last week and laid out its continuing concerns at the removal of the island's autonomy.

Canberra shut down the island's legislature and replaced it with a largely powerless regional council on July 1st last year - but Norfolk Islanders have been seeking redress ever since.

They have sought international support, including plans to seek listing with the United Nations as a non-self governing territory.

But Council of Elders member Albert Buffett told Don Wiseman that the delegation from Canberra appeared to feign ignorance of the impact of the Australian government's actions on the island.
