Pacific-flagged vessels could face increased scrutiny

Vessels flying the flags of Pacific nations could come under increased scrutiny, as an international black list grows.

The Paris Memorandum of Understanding committee on Port State Control has demoted Palau and Vanuatu from its grey list to its black list after ships with their flags were collectively detained at ports more than 50 times in the 2016 period.

Barrister and maritime law expert Bevan Marten told Mackenzie Smith the demotions will result in more inspections by port authorities.
