Solomons PM's withdrawal of Anti-corruption bill denounced

From , 5:02 am on 29 August 2017

An opposition MP in Solomon Islands has decried prime minister Manasseh Sogavare's withdrawal of an anti-corruption bill from parliament on Monday.

The bill was the flagship of Mr Sogavare's anti-corruption policies and aimed to establish the framework for an independent commission against corruption.

It had widespread public support but stalled after its first reading last year.

Mr Sogavare says his intention is to review the bill and bring it back to parliament.

But the opposition MP Derrick Manu'ari told Koroi Hawkins the prime minister was forced to withdraw the bill because his own government did not support it.
