An Auckland poet and academic has become the first Pasifika woman to be chosen as New Zealand's Poet Laureate.

Dr Selina Tusitala Marsh, of Samoan, Tuvaluan, Scottish and French descent, takes up the national award that recognises outstanding contributions to poetry.

She takes up this prestigious New Zealand mantle after the renowed poet, CK Stead.

Sara Vui-Talitu has more.
