Five Pacific cadets are participating in the New Zealand Army's officer training programme as part of a south west Pacific regional security programme.
It's an 11 month course designed to produce competent military leadership.
Two cadets each from Papua New Guinea and Fiji along with one from Tonga are among the seven overseas candidates in the intake of 40 would-be officers.
They're currently in PNG training in jungle warfare.
