PNG police stretched to the limit by ongoing election violence

Papua New Guinea police are struggling to contain ongoing election violence in Southern Highlands where two police officers were killed in the weekend.

While PNG's general election mostly concluded two months ago, the late declaration of a result in the Southern Highlands regional seat last week has sparked more violence and unrest.

The Police Commissioner Gary Baki confirmed two policemen were shot dead by supporters of a losing candidate at a roadblock near Mendi.

It brings to four the number of officers killed in election-related violence.

Mr Baki told Johnny Blades the police planned well for the election but had been stretched to cope with fallout from inconsistencies in the electoral process.
