A film academic says the success of a movie shot inside the Manus Island detention centre is due to its beauty as well as its theme.

Chauka, Please Tell Us the Time, had its international premiere last week at the London Film Festival and features at a festival next week in Canberra.

The documentary was filmed in secret on a smart phone by the Kurdish journalist and detainee Behrouz Boochani, who smuggled the footage to his co-director in the Netherlands, Arash Kamali Sarvestani

Ben Robinson Drawbridge spoke with Stephanie Hemelryk Donald, a professor of comparative film, and he began by asking her if the movie can be considered Australian.
