UN told Australia tarnished by offshore detention

The United Nations has been told that the indefinite, offshore detention of about 2000 refugees and asylum seekers in Papua New Guinea and Nauru has tarnished Australia's once highly regarded human rights reputation.

The testimony from a coalition of 56 NGOs to the UN Human Rights Committee coincided with Australia's election to the UN Human Rights Council.

The Human Rights Law Centre co-ordinated the testimony which also mentioned some of Australia's modest human rights gains.

Ben Robinson Drawbridge asked the centre's executive director Hugh de Kretser about the improvements.
