The head of the Tonga Advisory Council, Melino Maka, says recovering from Gita will require a massive relief to get the nation back on its feet and to support the vulnerable communities.

Mr Maka says Matsons Shipping has donated six containers and the Tonga Advisory Council and the Hahake Cyclone Gita Relief Group expect to have them filled and ready to send by this weekend.

Mr Maka told Don Wiseman the Hahake, or eastern districts, are where most of the people are and where the worst of the damage occurred.

Most homes are damaged due to flooding and some families are drying their furniture while the sun is out — at Ma'ufanga.
