We have AM and FM transmitters covering a large percentage of New Zealand. You can find the nearest transmitter by looking at our AM/FM frequency list. All of our new Radio New Zealand National FM transmitters and some Concert transmitters use the Radio Data System (RDS).

Freeview is available as both a satellite and terrestrial service. (The terrestrial service went live on 2 April). Satellite allows the service to reach 100% of the country while the terrestrial service is available to about 75% of the population.

A Freeview "set top box" is required to covert the digital signals into pictures and sound. (Soon there will be some digital TVs on the market and a set top box won't be required for those TVs).

Consumers have to pay for the one-off cost of buying the set-top box, and an aerial or satellite dish if they don't have one, but after that it is free, there is no ongoing subscription.

Freeview decoders are available nationwide. They come with an electronic programme guide listing all the available channels, and there are approved installers, and technical support is available.

The Sky and Freeview transmissions of National and Concert can also be received by using suitable satellite equipment with no ongoing subscription fees. The transmissions are in DVB compatible, "Free to Air" format. The Optus satellite provides reception to all of New Zealand including the Chatham Islands.
