All scripts and proposals are read and assessed by our in-house producers.
With 12-17 hours of newly commissioned plays per year, it is not only the quality of the script, but also the content and subject matter which is considered when deciding what to offer to the Drama Commissioning Panel. Many of the scripts and ideas submitted may therefore be rejected outright at this stage.
If a particular producer is interested in your script or proposal, they may ask you to do further work on it to increase its chances of being accepted, by the Commissioning Panel.
The Commissioning Panel meets regularly to consider a range of dramas, offered to them by Radio New Zealand drama producers and independents. These meetings are convened whenever necessary.
Commissioning decisions are made on what to commission based on a judgement of the proposal/script, the requirements of the station, the mix which is being looked for and the budgets available.
It is only if a project is commissioned that the writer will be formally contracted.

Go to theThe Drama Department commissions new writing and seeks to work with New Zealand’s best writers. Each year, up to 30 hours of new drama and comedy more than 200 readings (one-off short stories and serialised book readings), and over 50 new children's stories are produced.
