Emerging Drama Online
New Shorts (emerging writers)- Each year the Radio NZ drama department runs a series of writing-for-radio drama workshops throughout New Zealand. Most of these workshops are through the creative writing departments of tertiary institutions. As an extension to the writing workshops the participants are invited to submit a 15-minute radio drama script to the New Shorts competition. The drama department assesses the entries and, depending on the number available in any one year, chooses between three and six scripts for development and production. A number of new writers have gone on the receive commissions for full-length radio dramas.
Go Solo (emerging actors)- Each year the actors in the A3 graduating year at Toi Whakaari are required to devise, rehearse and perform a solo piece for the stage — the event is called Go Solo. As part of its brief to connect with the community and in support of emerging artists (in this case, actors) the Radio NZ drama department views all of the Go Solo presentations each year and selects up to four pieces for adaptation to radio.

The drama department commissions new writing from New Zealand's best writers and from emerging writers. Each year, we produce up to 30 hours of new drama and comedy, more than 300 book reading or short story episodes, and over 50 new children's stories.
