After years of poor returns for meat and wool, Cardrona Valley farmer Ben Gordon started killing and marketing merino lambs directly to local restaurants. After a lot of hard graft and early day speed wobbles, Cardrona Merino is now performing well. The product has a different flavour and texture according to a chef at Queenstown’s Botswana Butchery.
Also, this American’s Andrea and Mike Gualand are living the rural dream on their 10 acre block near Oxford. They have chickens, ducks, turkeys, pigs and a large herd of Toggenburg goats; and principal of Waituna West school in Manawatu, Glen Richardson, who is one of five recipients of the 2012 Take a Stand for Good Sorts in rural schools' campaign.
