About Radio New Zealand National and Music

As well as broadcasting a wide range of musical styles, Radio New Zealand maintains an extensive Music Library which is a significant cultural depository, and a rich resource for programme makers.

Radio New Zealand National is interested in receiving at least two copies of all music made by New Zealanders, or released in New Zealand. We prefer to receive music on CD.

The reason we ask for at least two copies of a work is so that we can lodge one copy in our Music Library for safe keeping, and use the other/s for programming. You may want to send more than two copies if you want a specific programme to consider your music for inclusion.

About 40% of Radio New Zealand National’s programme content is music, with 60% being news, current affairs and talk.

Radio New Zealand National programming includes music in a variety of ways

Play List: songs or music tracks are selected and scheduled to be broadcast within primarily talk-based programmes (e.g. Nine To Noon, Afternoons, Evenings etc.)

Specialist Music Programmes:  Songs are played on merit, and incorporated into discussions or interviews about music, musicians and the music industry (e.g. Music 101, The Sampler, The Music Mix, Musical Chairs, Access All Areas etc.)

Songs are included in programmes of music (e.g. Wayne’s Music, Hymns for Sunday Morning, Charlie Gillett’s World of Music etc.)

Live Music Recordings: Radio New Zealand National records live music performances, whether in a concert setting, or ‘In Session’ or ‘Live to Air’ in our studios (e.g. Music 101 Sessions, WOMAD recordings, Beale Street Caravan etc.). We will also consider broadcasting privately made live recordings.

Music on the Radio New Zealand Website: some music programmes and live recordings are available to listen to on demand here on the website. Visit the Radio New Zealand National Music Talk and Radio New Zealand National Music Live pages for the full selection. Not all music programmes are available on-line due to music copy rights.

If you would like your music considered for broadcast during Music 101...

If you would like to submit your work to the programme, please send music only on CD or via MP3 (we prefer CD).

If you do not have finished product, please clearly label both the CD and the case with the band or artist's name as well as the song or album title.

Include a track listing on the cover or attached bio as well as on the CD. If we can't read it, we can't play it.

Include a full biography (tell us the story) of the artist and include up-to-date contact details. A direct email and phone number is ideal.

Please also list your artist website and/or music hosting site so we can point our listeners in your direction.

If you're sending an album please identify two songs for us to consider.

We do listen to everything that comes in so it may take a while to get back to you.

'Introducing' on Music 101

The Introducing segment gives newer or less-exposed musicians two minutes to describe themselves and one of their songs.

The Introducing song + talk segment is also provided as a download (podcast) and as streaming audio-on-demand from Introducing (and as mirrored to iTunes and other platforms hosting RNZ-curated audio).

The owner/s of the song (including all copyright holders) must be willing and able to make the song legally available for this use to be able to participate in the 'Introducing' segment.
