In January 2009 Radio New Zealand National presented Live Music from Roundhead Studios in Auckland - Two hours of music, fun, laughter and special surprises on the radio.

The first show - on 15 January 2009 - was hosted by Neil Finn, Matthew Crawley, Nick Dwyer, Aroha Harawira & Hugh Hughes, with musical performances by Neil and Friends, The Naked and Famous, Dictaphone Blues, The Mots and Dr Colossus.

New Zealand’s foremost international music manager - Murray Hewitt from Flight of the Conchords - provided career advice to each band.

The Mots

The Mots.

The Mots play live in Roundhead’s A studio, watched by our lovely audience.

A very new band - formed in May 2008 this band of brothers (plus one) have already supported Liam Finn for a sell out concert in Auckland and produced/released their debut album ‘The Mots’ within 6 months of playing together.

The Mots are made up of the Mulholland brothers, Jolyon (guitar/vocals), Eden (guitar/synth/vocals), Will (drums/vocals), and their bass ‘mot’ Greg Hillier.

Coming from bands ‘Gasoline Cowboy’ (Jolyon/Greg) and ‘Motocade’ (Eden/Will), joining together brings exciting new musical ideas/collaborations for them all.

A mixture of Pop/rock/indie, with a good dash of humour, it’s a friendly, family thing.

The Naked And Famous

Aroha Harawira

Host Aroha Harawira talking to The Naked and Famous

This Auckland four-piece make twisted pop with big guitars, bigger beats, hooks aplenty and songs to die for.

Glam meets shoegaze, via dreamy pop and electroid elements in a collision of energy and originality.

In just 6 months their two EPs ('This Machine' and 'No Light') have seen them top the Alternative Chart twice, grab 5/5 Star reviews in the national press and score an invitation to influential music industry festival CMJ in New York during October. And they rock live.

Dictaphone Blues

Based around songwriter Edward Castelow, formerly of Christchurch via Sydney band Degrees K.

Following stints playing in The Ruby Suns and The Brunettes, Edward made time to work on his own songs with Dictaphone Blues - tender pieces, based on melody and structure.

The band consists of Edward, Ben Eldridge, Rob Collins and Myles Allpress, - a compelling live force.

Dr Colossus

This young band play a swirling mix of prog/gypsy/folk/metal/jazz which will surprise and delight.

Like a train-load of flaming camels crashing head first in to a circus tent filled with knifethrowers and surf guitars somewhere behind the Iron Curtain.

The soundtrack to a midnight beach party on the shores of the Adriatic that never actually happened…

Or a supervillain from The Simpsons. You decide.

Neil and Friends

Neil Finn, Bic Runga and Don McGlashan.

Neil Finn, Bic Runga and Don McGlashan

Local legends Neil Finn, Don McGlashan, Bic Runga, Sean Donnelly, and musicians of the caliber of Chris O’Connor and Jol Mulholland, perform a set of classic NZ pop songs.
