4:07 Indigenous and Pacific Experiences in WWI

The First World War had a great impact on many communities and cultures in the South Pacific region.  As part of Te Papa’s Conflict and Identity research programme to commemorate the centenary of World War I, three speakers discuss the ‘other’ narratives - the diverse stories and perspectives of indigenous and Pacific peoples  - that their research has revealed.

The panellists  are:

  • Gary Oakley – Indigenous Liaison Officer, Australian War Memorial, Canberra
  • Dr Monty Soutar – Senior Historian, Ministry of Culture and Heritage, Wellington
  • Dr Damon Salesa – Associate Professor of Pacific Studies, University of Auckland
  • Chair: Puawai Cairns  – Curator Contemporary Māori Culture, Te Papa.
