A handful of developers are "sitting on" thousands of undeveloped residential sections in Queenstown while agencies claim high property prices are caused by a shortage of supply. The government has promised to do what it can to make land available for building, as it strives to address problems of housing affordability - including freeing up crown land in Auckland and exploring the possibility of public-private partnerships with developers.
Meanwhile, Queenstown Lakes District Council figures show there are more than 22 thousand undeveloped residential dwelling sites, most in private ownership, across the District.
