But Jeremy LLoyd has never forgotten. His older brother Andy lost his life that day, Jeremy spoke to us from Surrey, England. (13′18″)
Les Miserables turns 25 in just over a month's time. In the UK, they're celebrating the milestone with 3 productions running simultaneously in London's West End. In New Zealand the show is being put on by the Operatic Society of Oamaru, who are also celebrating the birthday of their very own casting coup. Taking on the role of Valjean in the Oamaru production will be a New Zealander who was voted one of the best voices in the world by BBC Voice of Musical Theatre competition for 2 years running, Tim Beveridge. Andrew McKinstry Lloyd was a 16-year-old cadet on the steamship Turakina when German guns sank her off the Taranaki coast On 20 August 1940. The Turakina came across the German raider, the Orion in the Tasman, and with just one single 4.7-inch gun, instead of running, she turned to fight. 35 men lost their lives.
