Taumarunui is a service town and shopping centre in the middle of the North Island. In fact it's the largest town in the Ruapehu District, a lively community of just under 5,000 located at the confluence of the Whanganui and Ongarue Rivers. This year it celebrates its centenary, but it was an important centre for Maori long before European settlement. (30′42″)
It's the 50th anniversary of New Zealand's golden hour at the Olympics on September 2, 1960 in Rome. Peter Snell powering through to win the 800 metres gold, and then about half an hour later, his Owairaka clubmate, Murray Halberg stunned a great field to win the 5,000 metres gold. (23′49″)
Ngapuhi elder, the late Sir James Henare was a staunch advocate of the Treaty of Waitangi, saying it provide Maori with direction and guidance for the future. In an interview recorded in the late 1990s, where Sir James talks about the significance of the Treaty of Waitangi. (5′16″)
