2:10 Kaimai DC3 Crash Memorial - Richard Waugh - In July, 1963 a National Airways Corporation Dakota DC-3 left Whenuapai Airport in Auckland bound for Wellington Via Tauranga. Just after 9am, the pilot called the control tower inTauranga seeking permission to descend. The plane crashed in the Kaimai Ranges, between Matamata and Te Aroha killing 23 passengers and crew.  On July 3 fifty years will have passed since the worst aviation accident on New Zealand soil. Dr Richard Waugh is an aviation historian,and ten years ago, helped establish the memorial near the crash site.
