1:15 Auckland low decile schools' staffing struggles 

A blow for low decile schools struggling to attract new recruits after a 10 thousand dollar incentive scheme has been introduced Auckland wide.

Previously the ten thousand dollar one off payment was only being offered to new graduates accepting jobs at low decile schools.

Now the incentive is right around the region and bonds hte new teachers for three years to a school.

Principal of decile one Yendarra School in South Auckland, Susan Dunlop, says she's battling to fill six vacancies for next year.

She speaks to Jesse about why low decile schools are facing a battle to recruit staff.

1:20 National Poetry Day celebrates 20 years

We celebrate National Poetry Day today!

There are a number of events being held to mark the day today which is the 20th anniversary for the Phantom Billstickers National Day. You can look up what's on here.

As well as events it's being celebrated through an online poetry collection called 20/20 to which our best known poets have gifted their works to as well as one they enjoy from a peer.

Renowned Poet Paula Green joins Jesse to talk about this year's celebrations.

And also, today we are pleased to announce the inuagural Jesse Mulligan 1 - 4pm FLASH POEM CONTEST. There are some strict rules, and you have til 2pm to get your entries to us.

1:35 The health benefits of brisk walking

Middle aged people need to start walking faster according to public health officials in Endland - who say the amount of activity people do is tailing off  from the age of 40.

Public Health England estimates that 40 percent of 40 to 60 year olds don't even manage a brisk 10 minute walk once a month! It suggests regular brisk walks - and recommends people join a walking group.

We did some checking, and there are hundreds of walking groups across New Zealand - catering for all age groups

We talk to one of them, walk leader of the Churton park Community Walkers, Paul Alpe.

Today's New Zealand Live features the works of William Shakespeare set to music.  But it's the soliloquies rather than the sonnets that have grabbed the attention and imagination of composer, singer and guitarist Paul McLaney.  In what's believed to be a world first, McLaney has set some of the bards best known speeches to music played on guitar with a string quartet backing.

Paul is joined for this afternoon's performance by songstress Julia Deans and together the pair tackle plays such as; Hamlet, Macbeth and Twelfth Night. 

This is all part of a show called "Play On" which debuts tonight at the Taranaki Arts festival in New Plymouth.

3:25 Critter of the Week: The Back Beach Beetle

Back Beach Beetle, aka Bembidion (Zecillenus) tillyardi is only found in one place in the world - and it also happens to be one of this country's most beautiful beachs, Back Beach, which is part of Tahunanui Beach in Nelson.

The Back Beech Beetle is a very small, flightless ground beetle, the body is about 4 mm long and 1.3 mm wide., and is considered to be at risk.

DoC's threatened species Ambassador, Nicola Toki tellls us how these beetles live in open or sparsely vegetated sand in the high intertidal area, and their habitat is inundated by spring tides each month.
