Today marks the 60th anniversary of the launch of Sputnik 1.

It was the world's first artificial satellite and though it only operated for 92 days and didn't carry any scientific equipment, it's launch triggered the 'Sputnik crisis' which in turn sparked the Space Race between the Soviet Union and America.

We speak to Auckland University's resident space man Professor Jim Hefkey.

1:35 Creating a bike network

Last week we talked to you about Biketober - today we're looking at how communities can be designed to support cycling, improve transport and the health of those communities.

A talk was held last night focussing on the Canadian city of Edmonton - a similar size to Auckland, its creating a network of cycleways, all in one go, virtually overnight.

Tyler Golly lead that project and he's here in New Zealand sharing what they learned and how it can be applied to our traffic-choked city.

2:20 Bookmarks with CK Stead

This week's bookmarks guest is somewhat of a literary legend.

He's just shy of his 85th birthday and his first novel in five years has also just been released this week.

CK Stead, who's previous novels have won numerous awards is with me today in the studio to talk about his latest book, The Necessary Angel, and what he enjoys doing in his downtime.

With the price of a ticket to the cinema pushing 20 bucks, we all want to get the most out of going to the movies. Enter  Ann Hornaday.  She's the Chief film critic for the Washington Post. She wants people to not only love movies, that fill such a big place in pop culture, but understand them too. Hornaday says watching like a critic, paying attention to  all the elements that go into film like the editing, cinematography and production design, enhances the movie going experience.  She shares what she's learned on the job in her new book, Talking Pictures: How to Watch Movies.
